Hydrography resource guide

Choose the hydrography framework that fits your question.

SWORD, MERIT Hydro, NHDPlus High Resolution, NOAA NextGen Hydrofabric, and HydroSHEDS describe related parts of the hydrologic landscape, but they are not interchangeable. Use this guide to match geographic scope, representation, topology, resolution, and intended workflow before downloading data.

Five resources, five starting points

Start with the row that matches your domain and the kind of hydrography your analysis needs.

Comparison of five hydrography resources
Resource Primary purpose Coverage and representation Best fit Main caveat
SWORD Prior river network for SWOT river vector products. Global reaches of about 10 km and nodes at about 200 m spacing; version dependent. SWOT RiverSP matching, satellite river morphology, global river reaches. Match the release to the target SWOT product; v17b is the Version D baseline.
MERIT Hydro DEM-derived global hydrography and terrain attributes. Global land hydrography at about 90 m, with flow direction, accumulation, and terrain fields. Global routing, drainage analysis, flood and hydrodynamic modeling. Review D8 flow-direction and known coastal, glacier, bifurcation, and human-water limitations.
HydroSHEDS Multi-product global hydrographic layers for basin analysis. Global grids, river networks, basins, and related layers at product-dependent resolutions. Watershed delineation, basin comparison, and broad hydro-environmental modeling. Coverage, resolution, northern-latitude behavior, and licenses vary by product.
NHDPlus High Resolution Detailed United States hydrography with value-added attributes. U.S. stream networks, boundaries, elevation-derived catchments, and flow connectivity. U.S. watershed and routing analysis at high spatial detail. Primarily U.S. coverage; archives and availability vary by processing unit.
NOAA NextGen Hydrofabric Model-ready hydrologic geospatial fabric for NextGen workflows. U.S. catchments, flowpaths, hydrolocations, and cloud-native model artifacts. NOAA NextGen domains, parameterization, and operational model integration. Release artifacts can be provisional or domain-specific; review ODbL obligations.

Detailed distinctions

How the resources differ in practice

Satellite-aligned river network

SWORD

SWORD is the river-reach and node framework built to organize SWOT river vector products. Its global topology and morphology fields are useful when observations need to be attached to consistent reaches or nodes.

Choose it for
SWOT RiverSP matching, satellite river observation, and global reach-scale morphology.
Check first
Use the release named by your target SWOT product. Record the version; v17c is newer than the v17b Version D baseline.

Global DEM-derived hydrography

MERIT Hydro

MERIT Hydro provides a global drainage framework derived from the MERIT DEM, including flow direction, upstream area, gradient, river width, and height-above-nearest-drainage attributes.

Choose it for
Global routing, drainage and terrain analysis, flood modeling, and hydrodynamic applications.
Check first
Review its D8 representation and known limitations around coasts, bifurcations, glaciers, and managed channels.

Global multi-resolution hydrography

HydroSHEDS

HydroSHEDS is a family of hydrographic products rather than one single layer. It supports basin, river-network, drainage, and hydro-environmental analysis across global domains.

Choose it for
Watershed delineation, basin-scale comparison, global hydro-environmental modeling, and product-specific hydrography.
Check first
Confirm the exact product, resolution, geographic coverage, northern-latitude behavior, and license.

Detailed U.S. hydrography

NHDPlus High Resolution

NHDPlus High Resolution combines detailed U.S. stream networks, watershed boundaries, elevation-derived catchments, flow connectivity, and value-added hydrologic attributes.

Choose it for
High-resolution U.S. watershed, stream-network, connectivity, and routing analysis.
Check first
Coverage and archive size vary by processing unit; it is not a global hydrography product.

Model-ready U.S. fabric

NOAA NextGen Hydrofabric

The NextGen Hydrofabric organizes catchments, flowpaths, hydrolocations, topology, and model attributes into cloud-native artifacts for NOAA's NextGen water-resources modeling framework.

Choose it for
NextGen model domains, parameterization, catchment subsetting, and operational model integration.
Check first
Release artifacts may be provisional or domain-specific, and adapted databases must follow ODbL conditions.

Decision aid

Which one should I use?

  1. Need SWOT river observations? Start with SWORD, then match its release to the RiverSP product.
  2. Need global drainage or routing? Compare MERIT Hydro and HydroSHEDS according to terrain attributes, product resolution, and basin workflow.
  3. Need detailed U.S. hydrography? Use NHDPlus High Resolution for analysis; use NextGen Hydrofabric when the target is a model-ready NextGen domain.
  4. Need to combine resources? Treat them as different spatial supports and topologies. Harmonize identifiers, flow direction, catchment definitions, resolution, and version before joining or routing across products.

Reproducibility notes

Check the product before citing or integrating it.

Product names can cover multiple releases and formats. Record the dataset version, download date, spatial support, topology or identifier scheme, and license in your analysis notes. Consult the official source and the catalog record for the exact release used.
